EHR:  Drug-Drug, Drug-Allergy Interaction Checks

To meet EHR Meaningful Use (MU) requirements, eligible providers must enable drug-drug and drug-allergy interaction checks for the entire EHR reporting period.

The method you use for interaction checks depends on how many prescriptions you write during the reporting period.

More than 100 prescriptions:  Write only electronic prescriptions using (eRx) - Comprehensive version.  Drug-drug and drug-allergy interaction checks will be automated.  See eRx Drug-Drug, Drug-Allergy Interaction Checks

Less than 100 prescriptions:  You have two options:
1. Use eRx - Comprehensive version. Drug-drug and drug-allergy interaction checks will be automated.

OR

2. Apply for the exclusion for the Electronic Prescription measure, then write only paper prescriptions and use Open Dental's drug-drug and drug-allergy interaction alerts.  These prescriptions will count towards the denominator for the electronic prescriptions measure calculation; not the numerator.  But if applying for the exclusion, the percentage calculation won't matter.  Only use this option if you are certain you will write less than 100 prescriptions.

You should NOT use eRx - Basic version because you will not have drug interaction checks enabled for the reporting period.

Recommendation:  For documentation purposes, CMS recommends that you capture and save one or more dated screen shots during the reporting period as proof that drug interaction checks were enabled.
