Prescriptions

This page explains how to create and print a prescription for a patient.  To set up templates for prescriptions your practice commonly writes, or to set up drug-allergy and drug-drug interaction alerts, see Rx Setup.  To send prescriptions electronically, see Electronic Prescriptions

In the Chart module toolbar, click New Rx.

A few templates have been created common prescriptions.  To set up templates, see Rx Setup

Double click on a prescription template that is close to your requirements, or click Blank to start with a empty prescription.  The Blank button is not available for EHR users.

Enter the prescription Information.

Controlled Substance: If checked, the DEA# will display on the prescription and be optionally sent to separate Printer.

RxNorms:  Click [...] to select a normalized drug name from the RxNorm table.   This is used by EHR.

Notes:  This is only for your use, and not designed to go on the patient prescription.

Pharmacy:  Click Pick to select a Pharmacy if the prescription is called in.

When the prescription is complete, click OK, or click Print to print it to the default Printer. It will be added to the patient record and can be edited by double clicking on it in the Progress Notes of the Chart module.

Printing Prescriptions
To customize prescription layout, see Sheets Setup. You should be able to handle any regulations imposed by your state. If for some reason you cannot, please contact us and we will add any additional options that might be needed.

  • Remove various lines, boxes, and wording so you can print to a preprinted Rx form.
  • Add a dentist license number.
  • Add an image.
  • Change the orientation or size.
  • Change the wording for generic substitution.
  • Add a second signature line for generic substitution.
  • Add an RxStateID field.

Prescriptions cannot be viewed before printing, thus they can not be digially signed or edited.

Audit Trail
Any time a prescription is created, edited, deleted, or printed, a log is created in the Audit Trail.  Users must have the RxCreate security Permission to create new prescriptions and the RxEdit permission to change or delete prescriptions. To view an audit trail of changes made to a selected prescription only, double click an existing prescription in the Progress Notes, then click Audit Trail on the Edit Rx window.
