Prescription Setup

Prescription Setup

The Prescription list contains templates for specific drug Prescriptions your practice commonly writes. From here you also have the option to setup allergy and drug interaction alerts.  To define prescription print options (layout, signature lines, information that is printed), customize the Rx sheet type in Sheet Setup.

In the Main Menu, click Lists, Prescriptions.

Do not copy the above list for your own use without properly researching each item.

Templates can be freely deleted or changed without changing any patient data.  You can also write prescriptions that are not in this list, so you do not need to add every possible prescription.

Duplicate:  Click to base a new prescription template on an existing one.  You must highlight the existing prescription first.
Add New:   Add a new prescription template.

Drug:  The name of the drug the prescription is for.

Controlled Substance: If checked, the DEA# will display on the prescription as well as optionally send it to a separate Printer.

Sig:  Directions for the preparation and use of the drug.

Disp:  How much of the drug to dispense (e.g. how many tablets, volume).

Refills: Number of refills allowed.

RxNorms:  Click [...] to select a normalized drug name from the RxNorm table.  This is for EHR users only.

Notes:  This is only for your use and not designed to go on the patient prescription.

Alerts:  Create an interaction alert based a Problem, current Medication, or Allergy. This is most commonly used for allergies.  If you add a problem, medication or allergy here, and it is assigned to a patient on the Medical window, then creating a Prescription using this template will trigger a warning message.  The text must exactly match in both areas for the alert to occur, so make sure your master lists do not contain duplicates. To set up alerts for a category of drugs, you must add an alert for each medication in the category that you might prescribe.  For example, if you add an allergy to NSAIDs, you might add alerts for Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen.

To see the conditions that will generate the alert, or to customize the alert message, double click on the alert.

If this is a High Significance alert, check the box.  High significance alerts are always triggered when a Prescription is entered.  Low significance alerts only show if you have selected that option in EHR Setup.
